Some info and stuff about powers
Nov. 29th, 2008 03:01 pmViolet is a psychic and can be pretty powerful! For various reasons, though, she will not use her powers lightly, so under normal circumstances, they should hopefully not be a concern. That said, they're also her only means of defending herself, and you never know what could come up.
First off: at least per my interpretation, she is not continually overhearing surface thoughts, but it admittedly can seem that way. In reality, that's because she's also too damn smart for her own good; she's perceptive, she understands how people work, she's constantly analyzing everything, and, most of all, she tends to present her observations as cold hard facts. (Violet has a problem with assuming that because she knows more than she used to, she now knows everything.) I am genuinely trying to keep this stuff at a reasonable level, adjust for what makes sense for the other character and the thread, etc., but it's probably pretty easy to veer over into infomodding, so absolutely let me know if I need to back off or knock it off. I want to reiterate that she is not intended to actually know everything, even if she tends to give that sort of impression.
As for what she DOES do, her brand of psychics generally requires deliberately making a link to the subject. This is easier if it's someone she knows well, if it's someone she's connected to before, or if they're physically nearby. There are a couple exceptions where she's been able to sort of project a field that disrupts everyone's perceptions, but that's more limited and also exhausting. Violet tends to frame her powers as "touching" someone's mind; a brief, light touch is enough to get general information about the person, but with time she can comb through the depths of their psyche.
Further, she is able to influence the minds she reaches. Some things she has done in canon include: removing memories; planting suggestions that are a little strange but not totally unreasonable; sending someone into a calm, trance-like state; preventing people from noticing something odd, or hiding subjects from being noticed by the world in general; weird dreamwalking stuff.
She can also do good old-fashioned telepathic communication, though. If you've established enough of a link to her, you can even call her up yourself!
Also worth a note, the source of all this psychic nonsense is the fact that Violet's literal brain leapt out of her skull and became a Pokémon. The monster's name is Anima, but they share a mind, and can be considered a single being with two bodies. For this reason, Anima doesn't generally do much -- controlling both bodies is a little much even for them, and the Violet body tends to be more applicable.
